Essential Oils to Promote Mindfulness
Let’s talk about mindfulness for a moment. Did you know that when we constantly go from one thing to the next without taking inventory of how we are feeling, we are doing damage to our health?
If we walk around all day not taking note of our body & what we are feeling then we tend to just carry it. We aren’t able to release it or process it because we don’t let ourselves take the time to truly feel. It's pretty normal to stuff it & move on.
When we do this it affects our physical body in the sense that we hold on to our emotions. Our emotions are stored in different areas of the body. When we don’t process our emotions or manage them in a healthy way it starts to wear down our body systems as well as our emotional health which can lead to bigger issues.
One way to start taking care of our emotional health is to be mindful.
Let’s give it a try.
Close your eyes. Take a deep breath in, let it out. Notice how you feel by doing a full body scan. Notice any areas of your body that feel tight, or bothered, notice any areas of your body that feel good.
Start with your head, move down to your neck, shoulders, chest, back, stomach, hips, glutes, legs, knees, ankles & feet.
Now let’s try a breathing exercise.
So I want to ask you, what is ONE THING you need more of in your life today?
Joy? Peace? Patience? Energy?
What is ONE THING you need less of in your life today?
Anxiety? Negative thoughts? Distractions? Anger?
Breathe what you NEED in, all the way and breathe OUT what you need less of.
Example: Breathe in Joy, Breathe out anxiousness
Suck in what you need and release all that you don’t, your breath can be audible. Get it all out!
How do you feel? More aware of your body?
One way to start working on your emotional health is to be mindful like we just were. Instead of simply going from one thing to the next all day without taking inventory of what’s going on with you, try to be mindful of your emotions, of the way you feel, start to take notice of why you feel the way you do. Don’t judge yourself for feeling a certain way, that’s not helpful. Instead just notice.
Being mindful is the simple act of being aware.
We are able to care for our emotional health in many different ways. We are going to talk about how to support your health with essential oils.
How can oils help with your emotions?
When a fragrance is inhaled, the molecules travel up the nose where they are trapped by membranes. It only takes 3 seconds for the oil molecules to get to your brain.
- Essential Oils can directly stimulate the limbic system and the hypothalamus, which is where our behavioral & emotional responses come from in the brain.
- The limbic system also is directly connected to those parts of the brain that control heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels, and hormone balance. This is why oils can help on so many different levels.
- Can be used to combat stress and emotional trauma.
Have you ever noticed how smells, like bread baking, can send you back to a childhood memory and all the feelings associated with your grandmother? Smell accesses the limbic system of the brain which is the seat of our emotions.
Sesquiterpenes, which are found at high levels in essential oils, help to increase the oxygen in the limbic system and allow emotional trauma to be released. Pretty amazing right?!
